Connection between Stress and Pre-Mature Aging

Nowadays, people often lead a stressful life. There is stress of family life, office work, and stress of many small and big things. Little stress once in a while is fine, but when stress becomes a part of your life, it can cause many health problems and even make you look older than your actual age. Stress and your appearance go hand in hand. If you do not believe in this fact, just have a look at the mirror whenever you are in stress and you will find yourself looking a lot older.

There is a link between people who are constantly worrying and premature aging. Science has proved that stress damages DNA which in turn causes wrinkles, gray hair, and diseases that can make you look older than your age.

According to a study done at the University of California, San Francisco, it has been proved that there is a close link between psychological stress and cell aging. There are identified marked changes in the DNA of the white-blood cells when a person is in stress. Under prolonged emotional stress, the telomeres allow cell replication which means cells get shorter. When telomeres get too short, cells cannot divide and hence die sooner. As more cells die, the visible signs aging such as wrinkles, weakened muscles, fading eyesight and hearing, organ failure, and diminished thinking abilities become more apparent. It is essential to note that this happens with people who suffer from prolonger stress.

Also stress overload can cause the brain to trigger an over-release or imbalance of “stress hormones”. This in turn can lead to premature aging in coming years. Over production of the stress hormone adrenaline can also lead to temporary vision and hearing loss, which are signs of aging. Stress has also been shown to contribute to aging of brain due to which one can suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

When people are in stress, they often ignore other essential elements of healthy lifestyle.  During stressful days, people do not eat poorly, exercise less, drink more, and probably rely on medication. All these factors will gradually make your look older than your original age. On the other hand, leading a stress free life will promote healthy aging in its own right and will also set the foundation for other habits that can prevent pre-mature aging.

Stress stimulates many of the conditions that cause premature aging and so if you wish not to age prematurely, then it is essential to keep yourself free from stress.
